Popis: s a charter member of AORN’s Presidential Commission on Patient Safety in 2002, I remember my four years on the Commission as a pivotal time. AORN’s landmark initiative, Patient Safety First, governed by the Commission, was focused on reducing errors in surgical settings and creating multiple resources to help perioperative providers give safe patient care. For years, the Commission was involved in the direction of numerous projects that addressed patient safety issues, such as the development of position statements, recommended practices, tool kits, and an array of educational programs. To be involved in the Commission with such forwardthinking people at the start of the patient safety evolution in our health care system and professional practice was stimulating, to say the least. When the opportunity arose to serve as the guest editor for this Special Focus Issue of the AORN Journal about patient safety, I welcomed the chance to work with authors who are just as passionate about this very complex topic as I am. The “Patient Safety First” column continues to bring AORN Journal readers the latest information on patient safety resources and evidence-based practices to reduce errors.
