With the aging of their population and the increase of their capabilities, local and regional partners have worked, since 2007, to build several grontoples in order to stimulate clinical research and innovation in gerontology. In this contribution, I demonstrate that these understudied organizations were built around two models with different degrees of legitimacy : a hospital-centered model and a holistic model. I analyze the mechanisms of regional legitimization of holistic grontoples and show that these mechanisms determine the content of their interventions. At the national level, it finally appears that if the diversity of the grontoples makes their legitimization difficult, these difficulties are also the result of contradictions emanating from the central authorities themselves. Indeed, the regulatory State stimulates local authorities to develop local-based responses to the challenges they face on the one hand. But it is unable to give recognition to diversified organizations that are precisely the result of local-based policies on the other hand. Therefore, the search for national legitimacy can lead grontoples to a homogenization that could compromise the continuation of their hard-earned regional legitimacy. This contribution is based on a cross-sectional study of eight grontoples and on a longitudinal study of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine gerontopole, of which I was both a participant and an observer. The investigation is based on the analysis of a press corpus, a set of grey literature documents, a dozen participant observations and twenty-two semi-structured interviews conducted during a PhD research.
