Background, aims and objectives The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus-2 (SARS-COV2) is the viral agent for the Corona Virus disease (COVID-19). It was declared a pandemic in March 2020, after more than 120 million cases were reported with over 2.6 million deaths globally. South Africa reported the first its first case on the 5th of March 2020, since then over 1.5 million had tested positive. Human transmission is through droplets from coughing, sneezing or direct contact with infected surfaces which may result in cough or/ and fever or sore throat as the main sypmtoms within a week of contracting the viral infection. Despite the availability of vaccines, non-pharmaceutical measures such as handwashing with soap and water or using hand sanitizers, avoiding touching mouth nose and eyes, social distancing and wearing of face mask remain the most effective preventive measures. As the global fight against COVID-19 continues and plans for alternative forms of learning are being drawn up, the adherence of students and faculties to current preventive measures, such as handwashing and social distancing is crucial. This is because knowledge, attitudes and preventive practices (KAP) towards COVID-19 play a critical role in this fight too. The study examined COVID-19 preventive practices by staff and students at Durban University Technology, South Africa. Findings will indicate the level of compliance with preventive practices against COVID-19 infection in higher institutions for evidence informed policy on further strategies to be implemented by relevant health and education stakeholders. |
