// In this paper, we seek to identify in the oeuvre of David Cronenberg, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter and other filmmakers the dialogue with horror literature, more specifically with the short stories of H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). Revisiting the theory that considers Lovecraft unadaptable for the screen, we will see how the stories of the American writer exerted great appeal in the final decades of the twentieth century, and have proven to be a recurring source for contemporary cinema. In this sense, we propose to observe key works of horror and science fiction cinema of the 1970s and 1980s, relating them to the philosophical, aesthetic and mythological themes elaborated by Lovecraft, within the historical moment in which these films were produced.
