An escort service to transport patients to off-ward therapy appointments saved nurses' time. A central scheduling system reduced the confusion of demands for the same patient at the same time from many departments in the hospital. But the benefits of these two innovations were offset by their deleterious effects on the quality of nursing care. A third innovation scheduling patients' therapy appointments on the basis of the time needed for nursing caresolved the problem. |
