The city of Reggio Emilia in Italy has promoted intercultural governance governance since 2001. Strategies to reinforce intercultural principles have endured to the extent that integration policies focus on the cultural and educational needs of the population, thus strengthening networks at several levels. The notion of “narrative capital” (generally applied to individuals) is also relevant for understanding cities in their search for the best way to improve social cohesion through intercultural dialogue. This text is divided in three sections: the first is about the influence of contextual factors on the process of policy design. The second is about strategies for coping with rapid social change (especially with regard to the importance of networking). The third section examines intercultural programmes and long-term strategic planning. |
