Popis: | 15 ewes were used to study fertilization by inserting IUDs into 7 and sham-operating on 8. Of the 8 sham-operated ewes 8 produced 10 ova; 6 ewes had 7 cleaving ova with 6-200 accessory spermatozoa. All 7 ewes with IUDs produced 8 ova none of which were cleaving. 4 ewes were studied for inhibition of sperm transport with IUDs; 4 sham-operated controls had 7 oviducts containing spermatozoa and 7 uterine horns containing spermatozoa. None of the 4 ewes with IUDs had spermatozoa in their oviducts and only 1 uterine horn contained spermatozoa. A third experiment showed 5 sham-operated ewes had 107 contraction moving towards the oviduct and 26 toward the cervix. In 5 IUD-bearing ewes there were 12 contractions moving toward the oviduct and 113 toward the cervix. This may account for the inhibition of sperm transport. 0-1 day after IUD removal in 5 ewes all 5 had ova and 1 ewe had 1 cleaving ovum. 6-13 days after IUD-removal 5 ewes had 8 ova and 4 ewes had 6 cleaving ova. |
