Analyzing a corpus of interrogatives classes drawn from contemporary German literature, I study the linguistic procedure and inferences which lead to various interpretations of questions. The interpretation given to a question derives from the presence and the configuration of clues (verb in first, second or last position, interrogative-words in w- and illocutionary particles, modals, question-tags. . ), which acquire their meaning in a certain con-cotext (relation with the information coming before or after the question). A distinction of the following is made (dialogical situation): 1) questions that express a cognitive deficit (request of information, confirmation infirmation), 2) questions that lead to a request of action (polite request, offering. . . ), 3) questions asked when actually no question is needed (rhetorical question). The allocution dimension is constantly present in this research study in relation with the meaning to question. |
