Popis: | This article presents an analysis of three different optical circuits each of which exhibit bistable behaviour. The devices are an optical cavity ring oscillator, a simple optical fibre resonator and a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with feedback. Comparison is made between the resonators by means of a linear stability analysis and bifurcation diagrams. We show that instabilities can affect the bistable nature of the devices. We also find that the dynamics of the cavity ring and the simple fibre resonator are equivalent up to a scaling, and that the dynamics of the nonlinear optical loop mirror are different due to counter-propagating fields and the transmission characteristics of the NOLM. For each of the devices discussed, parameter values which give relatively large isolated bistable regions are listed. |
