Popis: | The frequency of elevated cord IgM levels (≥20 mg. per cent) in a predominantly middle class Caucasian group of patients was very low (0.8 per cent). This suggests a low incidence of congenital infections and other causes for increased cord IgM in this type of population. Only one case of definite congenital infection was recognized and this was a child with rubella. The possibility of suppressed IgG response in this case was suggested. A correlation between low birth weight and low cord IgM was found in this study. The lower rates of increased IgM in middle and upper socioeconomic groups suggest that factors which cause fetal and neonatal damage are present less frequently in these populations. |
