Popis: This paper presents a methodology for identifying the oscillation source locations and for tuning the Power System Stabilizers (PSS) of the Ecuadorian power system using synchrophasor measurement units (PMU). Through a statistical analysis of the oscillatory stability in the Ecuador — Colombia interconnected system; using information obtained from CENACE's Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS), low frequency oscillation modes are identified. Later on, the oscillation source locations are determined through a phase analysis of appropriately decomposed signals obtained from the PMUs, using the WAProtector's modal identification algorithm. Once the oscillation sources are identified, a PSS tuning methodology is applied for determining the required phase compensation for the Generator — Exciter — Power System (GEP) function in a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system. Although this method is widely approached in literature, to improve the damping of a particular inter-area mode, the present paper shows how a field procedure that uses real-time PMU data allows determining the optimal PSS parameters by finding an adequate response of the PSSs, the excitation systems and the generation units in general. As a final step, a wide area PMU-based statistical analysis is performed once again to determine the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
