In response to the importance of viruses in water with regard to public health, the Chicago Board of Health, the Chicago Dept. of Water and Sewers, and IIT Research Institute (IITRI) entered into a collaborative study designed to (1) compare viral concentration methodologies and (2) elicit meaningful data that could be applied to the question of the viral status of Lake Michigan. The study proceeded over a period of nine months beginning in Dec. 1970 and included the winter, spring, and summer seasons of the year.
