Kulkarni, R. K., Kamerath, CD., and Allred, K. L., 1986. Genetic diversity between isolates of Pleurotus ostreatus as revealed by isozyme analysis. The soluble proteins from 30 dikaryotic isolates of Pleurotus ostreatus were subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Using enzyme activity staining procedures, the isozyme banding patterns for 15 enzymes were evaluated. The presumed genotype for each strain at 15 biochemical loci was determined. Based on the observed enzyme polymorphism, the 30 isolates were divided into 28 different genotypic classes. Coefficients of genetic similarity were calculated to facilitate comparisons between strains. The similarity coefficients were used to generate a dendogram to illustrate the relationships between strains. The results indicate the tremendous genetic diversity that exists within this species. This information may be appropriately used to produce new hybrids by crossing the requisite monokaryons. |
