Popis: | A number of investigations have recently been carried out to measure the isotopic composition of primary helium nuclei. The composition observed is modified from its true composition at the source (s) by its passage through interstellar hydrogen, owing to the processes of ionization loss, fragmentation, and solar modulation. Under the assumption that only He4 nuclei are accelerated in the source (s) and taking into account the ionization loss, fragmentation, and modulation, we have calculated the energy dependence of the ratio He3/(He3 +He4). A comparison of our results with experimental values indicates that the primary radiation has traversed 2.5–3.0 g cm−2 of hydrogen, independent of its energy, a value consistent with the value derived from L (flux of nuclei with 3 ≤ Z ≤ 5)/S (flux of nuclei with Z ≥ 6) measurements at high energies. |
