Regeneration of plants from mesophyll protoplasts of Solanum species of the Etuberosa group

Popis: Using the techniques developed for Solanum tuberosum cv. Russet Burbank, plants were regenerated from mesophyll-derived protoplasts of three non-tuberous species of the Etuberosa series of the genus Solanum . Sixty percent of the p -calli (protoplast-derived calli) produced from S. etuberosum protoplasts produced plants. Five percent of the p -calli derived from S. brevidens and S. fernandezianum also regenerated plants. The significance of this finding for the synthesis of somatic hybrids between S. tuberosum and these intractable species is considered.
