Infrared and Raman spectra of Ph4Si have been studied in solution, in the melt and in the crystalline state. Its isooriented polycrystalline thin layers have been investigated using polarized i.r. wavelengths. In solution and in the melt group vibrational bands appear. In the crystalline state static crystal field splittings have been observed. These splittings give evidence for the vibrational interaction of the phenyl groups mediated by a heavy silicon atom. On the basis of the experimental data, the fundamental modes of free molecules and of molecules occupying S4, sites in the crystal have been assigned. |
