The computational fluid dynamics methodology was developed to qualitatively study effects of geometrical design and physical property on the mixing quality of floating solids in stirred tanks with an up-pumping pitched blade turbine. The multiple reference frame approach was used to model the relative motion between rotating impeller and stationary baffles. Two important mixing parameters, power number (Np) and standard deviation (σ), were used to predict critical impeller speed (NCS) for complete suspension of floating solids and compare the mixing efficiency. Predicted results were compared with the experiment results in the open literature and were explained with published mechanisms or theories concerning solid suspension. Reasonable agreements were achieved. Copyright © 2014 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. |
