Popis: Data analysis for structural composites inevitably depends upon the careful application of the Law of Mixtures,- the mathematical identity of a property value of a composite with the sum of the volume-weighted values of that property for the several constituents. Most important among characterizing parameters is the real density. Using for illustration a currently available polycrystalline Al2O3 fiber in a well-characterized but fictitious borosilicate glass matrix, the simple calculations necessary to reconcile calculated with observed values for real density, longitudinal elastic modulus and linear coefficient of thermal expansion are shown, and the extreme importance of accurately measured and fully reported real densities emphasized. A modest change in the current zero-porosity density of polycrystal alpha-alumina is suggested.
