Popis:	The known 2,3- and 3,5-benzylidene acetals of 1,4-anhydro- d -mannitol have been shown to have the ( R ) and ( S ) configurations, respectively. The related 2,3-( S ), 3,5-( R ), 5,6-( R ), and 5,6-( S ) acetals have also been obtained and their configurations assigned by n.m.r. spectroscopy. The reaction of 1,4-anhydro- d -mannitol with acetone under kinetic-control conditions afforded the previously unknown 5,6-isopropylidene acetal.
