Fifty-two cases (48 cases of benign, 2 case of borderline and 2 cases of malignant) of phyllodes tumor of the breast, resected and diagnosed pathologically at the hospital from 1987 to 1996, were evaluated clinicopathologically. The successful rates of preoperative diagnosis were less than 40% by echography of the breast and needle aspiration cytology of the tumor. So it is thought that phyllodes tumor must be diagnosed synthetically before surgery. Especially we often have difficulty in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions preoperatively, where a wide excision must be done followed by microscopical diagnosis. |
