Popis: | The midgut of last-instar larvae of Pieris brassicae was studied in three sections to determine their involvement in the absorption of dietary myo-inositol, choline, and oleic acid. Data suggest that although all regions absorbed the three molecules, the transport of choline was greatest in the anterior third of the midgut, and transport of myo-inositol in the middle third of the midgut. Oleic acid absorption was found to be greatest across the anterior third of the midgut. The data further suggest that choline and myo-inositol can both be transported from midgut tissue to the serosal side against a concentration gradient, thus implying the function of specific transport proteins in the midgut epithelium. |
