Executive function (EF) refers to a broad cognitive process used to direct behavior specifically in situations where some responses must be inhibited and others need to be initiated (Banich, 2009). Definitions of EF tend to involve reference to the frontal lobe (Hayes, Gifford, & Ruckstuhl, 1996), so much so that it is difficult to feature a definition that does not reference this area of the brain. While there are some differences in the definition of the construct, recent research suggests that EF is a unidimensional construct (Goldstein, 2012) and includes components of such cognitive processes such as planning, goal persistency, cognitive flexibility, abstract thinking, and rule acquisition (Baltruschat et al., 2011). |
