An intermediate energy neutron detector has been developed, consisting of a small wax sphere surrounding a boron-loaded scintillation counter. The energy dependence of the detector was tested using the Harwell “neutron booster”, which provides short pulses of neutrons whose energies may be measured by time-of-flight techniques. With the optimum size of 6.3 cm diameter, the response was proportional to within ± 12% of the neutron dose rate in the energy range 1 eV to 10 keV. This size would be suitable for use in a portable survey monitor. |
