High-energy-density Ni-rich cathode materials suffer from the critical challenge of poor capacity retention due to micro-cracking and interfacial reactivity with electrolyte. Addition of foreign elements to some Ni-rich materials is known to stabilize their capacity over cycling. In this work, we established that the benefit of these elements coating on Ni-rich hydroxide precursors before synthesis is universal in presence of major dopants used in Ni-rich materials in terms of improving the capacity retention of Co-free Ni-rich polycrystalline materials. Experimental characterization and theoretical modelling suggested some new perspectives on the location of these foreign elements along with their morphology control of primary particles and the working mechanism for superior performance. |
