Popis: Objective To investigate how patient perceptions of their diabetes healthcare providers’ (HCP) age, gender, and ethnicity impact shared decision-making (SDM) using the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Methods Adult participants receiving diabetes care at community sites, primary care, or specialty clinics participated in semi-structured one-on-one interviews conducted from Nov 2018 to Jan 2019. Responses were transcribed and qualitatively analysed with NVivo for emergent themes. Results We conducted 28 interviews with participants aged 34–81. The following themes were identified: 1) a participant's gestalt of their diabetes HCP was strongly gender-dependent; 2) there exists a hidden preference for white HCPs; 3) age evoked a less defensive response with regards SDM; and 4) degree of trust-in-self and in their diabetes HCP directed participants’ readiness to participate in shared decision-making. Conclusion Participants’ narrative experiences strongly suggest that participants view their diabetes HCPs through a gendered and racialized lens.
