Popis: Introduction: Obesity-related respiratory failure (ORRF) may occur as a result of obesity alone (obesity hypoventilation syndrome, OHS) or in combination with other problems, such as obstructive lung diseases (OLD). For patients with ORRF treated with NIV, it is unknown if the presence of OLD impacts patient outcome. Aims: To compare treatment outcomes in patients with ORRF according to the presence or absence of OLD. Methods: Retrospective study of consecutive patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure attributed to obesity who started home NIV (2006-2011) via a regional NIV service. Patients were identified via database and divided into group I (FEV1/VC > 0.7) and group II (FEV1/VC Results: Both groups were well matched (Table 1). 64% of patients in group II had severe OLD (FEV1 Conclusions: For patients with ORRF, the presence of obstructive lung disease does not exert an adverse impact on NIV compliance or survival.
