development of health literacy skills in their pharmacy students and what are their challenges in doing so; and 4) be directed to a range of resources in the public domain that may be adapted to their future teaching of health literacy. Description of Workshop Activities: 1. Introductory presentation: What is health literacy? How can a pharmacist with health literacy skills improve consumers’ health and contribute to the pharmacy healthcare team? 2. Small-group activity + reporting: Can health literacy be taught? If so, what health literacy skills are required for entry into pharmacy courses, at various points during pharmacy study, and for pharmacy graduates? Case examples will be used to stimulate discussions. 3. Small-group activity + reporting: What are the challenges (internationally) in developing these skills? What are the challenges in assessing these skills? 4. Presentation: A collection of educational resources in the public domain that might be adapted to health literacy curriculum. Discussion and debate about the utility of these resources are needed. 5. Discussion: ‘See one, do one, teach one’. How might pharmacy graduates enhance the health literacy of other pharmacy staff (assistants, technicians) so that they might recognise health literacy deficits of consumers and provide appropriate assistance, and thereby improve the health literacy ‘capability’ of a pharmacy team? |
