In our previous experiments, we found that inter-individual variability in memory performance was greater for cued recall (CR) than free recall (FR) of English words. We found some evidence that this effect may be more related to processes at test than processes at study. However, in all previous experiments, we used a set of words that were unrelated (except that they were all nouns), and CR word pairs were randomly sampled from this list. One possibility we considered is that the "CR variability effect" might be in part due to the random pairing of words. For instance, it might be that word similarity is more important for CR than FR, and the low similarity/variability in similarity could have contributed to greater CR than FR variability. To address this possibility, we propose the current experiment: a test of the CR variability effect with purposefully-constructed, meaningfully-related word pairs. |
