Popis: Post-war local authority schools have generally been constructed with large window areas which tend to produce discomfort for pupils and teachers. A radical departure from this design was Elmstead Market primary school which specifically aimed to provide a good learning environment. Studies made of the thermal behaviour of the structure indicate that stable temperatures are provided at desk level and that the thermal inertia of the more opaque walls and roof delays the peak effects of solar radiation until after school hours. The need for cooling in summer is relatively small.
