Popis: The application of risk assessment techniques to contaminated land problems in the UK has been very limited, partly due to the prescriptive approach described in guidelines 1 where, for many contaminants, reliance is placed on the judgement of professionals to set ‘action’ levels. Explicit consideration of either hazard testing methods or the nature of the hazard and its mobility or the variety of receptors, and their vulnerability, is absent from ICRCL guidelines. A broad strategy for risk assessment has been developed 2. There are two important components: (i) a rigorous approach to the ‘no-action’ option is adopted (ii) a tolerable level of assumed risk of 10-6 per year is identified.
