Popis: | The magnetic domain state of synthetic titanomagnetites (1 − x)Fe3O4·xFe2TiO4 with x = 0.0–1.0 has been investigated through a study of their susceptibility and hysteresis over a wide temperature range. For the composition range x=0.3–1.0 the results indicate that these materials are not effectively in a multidomain state and their magnetic behaviour in some cases resembles that attributed to spin glasses. In contrast, magnetite (x=0) readily forms multidomains upon synthesis. Materials with x between 0.1 and 0.2 have magnetic properties different from those of other compositions and a possible multidomain state for them cannot be excluded by the present study carried out with two magnetic techniques. Considering the common association of titanium with the iron oxide minerals in basalts, we propose that the mode of formation of the synthetic titanomagnetites reported here could explain why single-domain and superparamagnetic behaviour is commonly found in basalts irrespective of the size of the magnetic mineral grains. |
