Popis: This chapter emphasizes how trying to empower the voices of working people in a large retailer, hotel, hospital, manufacturer, or restaurant can be confusing today. Traditional collective bargaining strategies are often stymied by a lack of clarity over who the actual boss is. The chapter discusses the direct employer, which is often a franchisee or subcontractor, that may not actually have the power to adjust the exploitive business model, even if they are willing to negotiate with a union of their employees. The chapter highlights the need of workers to target the individuals and organizations that own the enterprises in order to hold significant positions of power in the economy within the new workplace of franchisees and subcontractors. In the new world of global capital there simply is no winning plan to build a shared prosperity without confronting individual owners or ultimate profiteers and their corporate power directly.
