When two animals meet, there are two general types of behavior that might be exhibited. One of these is equivalent behavior of tolerance or indifference, in which neither challenge nor submission is displayed. The other is nonequivalent behavior of active dominance and subordination. The manifestation of any of these phenomena varies from group to group. Observations of the behavior of the grain beetle Tenebrio molitor suggest that there is a strong degree of domination exerted by some of the individuals over others. Evidences of this are found in laboratory cultures of the grain beetle in the frequent appearances of inj uries to the living animals (larvae, pupae, and adults). |
