Popis: Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) have seen tremendous interest in recent years because of their unique characteristics at the nanoscale level that include high catalytic activity; large surface area; switchable redox reactivity; oxygen transfer ability; and enzyme mimetic properties, which vary with the size, shape, charge, surface coating, and surface reactivity. These properties make them powerful candidates for the design of chemical and biological sensors with improved detection sensitivity, stability, and simplified detection schemes. This chapter describes the properties of CNPs as active sensing materials and provides a summary of the most successful sensing mechanisms and applications. An overview of various types of sensors that incorporate CNPs and biological receptors highlighting methodological challenges and limitations is also presented.
