In this chapter, we hear the stories of a married couple from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Patrick, 47 years old, had a good life as a businessman in the informal economy of a low-income, African country until the onset of war and threats to his and his wife’s security required that they leave the country and come to Canada as government-sponsored refugees. His wife, Chantal, 47 years old, has not been able to obtain permanent resident status after trying for more than ten years. Patrick’s experience as a small businessman in Congo is not recognized or valued in the formal, credentialed, and salaried economy of Canada, whereas Chantal cannot work because she lacks appropriate legal status. |
