Popis: Addition of a second electric sector, to a double-focusing mass spectrometer, permits tandem mass spectrometry experiments to be conducted with high mass resolving power for selecting the precursor ion. The present work attempts to systematise additional experimental techniques which can be exploited, using such a triple-sector instrument, to provide experimental information which would be difficult or impossible to obtain in any other way. Examples are both quoted from the literature and presented as new experimental results. Use of a double-focusing instrument of reversed configuration (with the magnet preceding the electric sector) is advantageous, in several respects, in the present context.
