Popis: The non-stationary temperature distribution in a 2-D cross-section of a cylindrical copper wire with insulation was investigated. The wire was conducting direct current of a constant value. The Hankel boundary condition modelling convectional cooling was applied. The convective heat transfer coefficient was assumed to be a function of the angle coordinate in the cylindrical coordinate system. The heat transfer equation was discretized in space and time domain with the use of the implicit FDM. For each discrete value in the time domain the solution of the resulted system of algebraic equations was determined by a parallel conjugate gradient method. The results of the simulation were compared to those obtained from a commercial software package: EMRC Nisa. The comparison showed good agreement between the results. All the results and the comparison are presented in the paper along with the comments and conclusions. © (2007) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
