Popis: | Traditionally planners have perceived the metropolitan commercial landscape as organized into shopping malls and districts serving localized to regional markets, strips, and specialized areas. A recent survey indicates that planners and consumers still prefer shopping centers over strip development. The survey also shows, however, that both groups have difficulty characterizing the contemporary commercial urbanscape in terms of centers and strips. New types of stores, development patterns, and consumer behavior mitigate against the continued application of a hierarchical ideal where simple centers serve local markets and complex ones serve broad regions. A new conceptualization of commercial space, based on contemporary trends, is needed for planning practice. |
