Popis: Stress is an inevitable part of life. When we experience a stressful event our nervous system is automatically activated and we release hormones that help us to respond to the challenge we are facing. We need a certain level of stress to function effectively; however, when stress is severe or unrelenting it can have a harmful impact on our physical, psychological, and social well-being. This chapter examines the nature of stress and describes the models that have been developed to explain how and why we react when faced with a stressful event. The chapter also describes the prevalence of stress in the community and highlights some of the causes, effects, and risk factors for stress. In the concluding section of this chapter, the evidence in regard to specific strategies for preventing and managing stress is summarized.
