Lord Raglan, Joseph Campbell, and several modern critics have analyzed the “hero with a thousand faces,” especially studying the hero quest with its archetypal phases such as the miraculous conception, the quest itself, the descent to the underworld, and the return (Gilgamesh, Jesus, Quetzalcoatl, Heracles, Cuchulainn, Theseus, Hainuwele, Draupadi, etc.). Typically, the hero is conceived or born in a miraculous manner. Often the hero undergoes some kind of initiation in childhood that is an indication of great deeds to follow. These deed are at once extraordinary labors and a quest for something well beyond what we think of as possibile. This chapter examines the archetypal approach to the hero using examples from several cultures. How is the hero our representative in the world of myth? What is our psychological connection with the mythic hero? How is the hero us? |
