Popis: | Routine exercise confers a plethora of cardiovascular benefits and is inversely associated with the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the cardiovascular stress induced during exercise transiently increases the risk of an adverse cardiac event, particularly in those with underlying CAD. Sports cardiologists commonly encounter older individuals with CAD who engage in high levels of exercise. This chapter will review the burden of CAD in athletes, discuss the initial clinical evaluations, and explore the management of athletes with established CAD. We will consider some unique considerations that pertain to competitive athletes, including eligibility as well as returning to athletic participation after an acute coronary event. Finally, we will deal with the putative mechanisms of cardiac events during exercise and the association between high levels of exercise and coronary artery calcification. |
