Wideband Beam-Switchable Antenna Loaded With Dielectric Slab for 5G Applications

Popis: A novel low-profile wideband beam-switchable antenna for 5G applications is proposed in this letter. The antenna consists of two parts: a crossover with slots based on the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) and a dielectric slab with a high dielectric constant. Four centrosymmetric slots are etched on the top layer of the SIW crossover. A crossed dielectric slab is overlaid on the SIW forming a dielectric image slab waveguide, which is well excited by the slots to transmit TM0 modes (or surface wave) due to the high similarity of the electric field distribution, which generates the tilted radiation beam. Owing to the novel crossover configuration and four antenna ports, there are four transmission directions of the electromagnetic waves, which result in four tilted beams. The antenna operating mechanism and the design procedure are illustrated in detail. Measured results show a –10 dB impedance bandwidth of 31% from 4.25 to 5.82 GHz and a gain of 6.2–9.1 dBi over the operating band. The antenna shows a stable and switchable pattern. The overall antenna size is 1.134 × 1.134 × 0.085 λ (λ is the free space wavelength at 4.25 GHz). The proposed antenna features a novel working principle, a low profile, good radiation performance, which is well suited for 5G NR indoor applications.
