Popis: | In this study we assess the insurance effect using qualitative data from Senegal and Zimbabwe and then propose an extended version of this theory that we believe better represents contemporary reproductive strategies and behaviors in these countries. Senegal and Zimbabwe were selected because they stand at different points in their demographic transitions they have contrasting colonial and postcolonial experiences and policies and they have extensive quantitative databases. By comparing the deliberate insurance strategies of parents in two sub-Saharan African countries that differ in culture history and geography we gain insight into the common and specific factors driving reproductive decision-making and more generally fertility transitions in the region.
