Popis: Multiple literacies, multiple ways to look at the world, impact how students make connections to and understand their world. Referring to students' reading of their world using the term multiple literacies validates that students actually add knowledge to the academic conversation. Referring to the wealth of knowledge students bring as only skills or experiences alone is too 1-dimensional and allows us as educators to ignore easily the richness and complexity of students' contributions to the academic conversation. Multiple literacies express the depth of understanding it takes to read the world. Middle school students, in particular, need to know that they have valuable and unique ways to understand academic and nonacademic text. Through the use of hidden literacies, educators can build students' authentic academic literacies and change the knowledge to transformative literacies to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
