Popis: When epidermal scales parasitized by ringworm fungi are cleared in potassium hydroxide and examined microscopically, there is frequently found, in addition to the normal mycelium of the parasite, a network of disorganized material described in the literature as the "mosaic fungus." There is difference of opinion as to the nature of the mosaic fungus. It was first described by Weidman 1 who pointed out that it follows the outline of the walls of the epidermal cells in such a way as to suggest that air or some other refractile matter is imprisoned between the cells. He succeeded in separating the mosaic fungus from the cells by microdissection and in staining it with Giemsa's stain, and he concluded from this that it is of fungous nature. Greenwood and Rockwood 2 stated that they had observed the mosaic fungus in contact with normal hyphae and concluded that it is disintegrated
