Popis: | This chapter explores the attitude of the various dynasties and regimes towards the maritime world and the mechanisms they put in place for its control. It adopts a longue duree approach, beginning with the Han dynasty and then tracing its successors' encounters with the seas until the Ming. The chapter highlights the tradition of court-commissioned voyages; it examines the installation of new posts and regulations, and it considers the kind of goods that were exchanged between key partners. This approach will allow the pattern as well as the variation to emerge; and it will highlight the case of the Qing. The consistencies and disparities of the last two millennia of Chinese encounters with the sea have been laid bare in the chapter. Keywords:Chinese seas; Han dynasty; maritime world; Ming; Qing dynasty |
