Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease with cognitive and functional impairment. Exacerbated inflammatory responses in microglia represent one of the major risk factors and trigger for various neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Thus microglial-driven inflammation serves as an important model for investigating potential therapeutic entities for slowing the progression of neuronal cell death in AD. Recent evidences suggest that one of the strategies to protect the brain and slow down the progression of AD is by consuming diet enriched in antioxidants and/or polyphenolic components. Of high relevance, particular dietary components have been shown to regulate microglial activation via interfering in signal transduction of specific pro/antiinflammatory genes. Thus this chapter attempts to provide a profound insight into the microglia-driven inflammatory events in AD and role of selected dietary components with ability to intervene, hence correct the deregulated neuroinflammatory events. |
