The term “no-go zone” or “no-go area” usually refers to dangerous areas. As criminal gangs have extended their reach, there are presently areas in Sweden where police and emergency services are regularly attacked when they enter. There are now 60 “criminally exposed” areas in Sweden, where “local criminal networks are considered to have a negative impact on the local community.” This development risks creating “parallel societies,” where criminal gangs can leverage their violence capital in order to show that they—not the police—are in charge. Exposed areas are nearly without exception immigrant-heavy suburbs, creating a critical obstacle to the successful integration of immigrants into wider society. |
