To control their urges and desires, people use self-regulation strategies, two of which are to resist (purposeful suppression) and to reappraise (thinking about the desire in a way which makes it less appealing). Both strategies have been found effective, however, some researchers claim that the resist strategy is more effective, while others claim it provokes a stronger response, as it triggers more thoughts about the desire. This project aims to find out whether one strategy is more effective than the other in suppressing cravings to food. Saliva production will be used as an objective measure to determine desire levels. Comparing the amount of saliva produced by participants when attending to food while using the self-regulation strategies would give reliable evidence of the effectiveness of each strategy but would also provide a way to show whether purposeful inhibition really has adverse effects on desire regulation or not. |
