Engage, empower, and enlighten: Art therapy and image making in hospice care

Popis: There has been scarce evidence-based research performed in the field of art therapy within hospice and palliative care. This article provides an introduction to the field of art therapy and speaks to the benefits it may offer to support the emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being of hospice patients. When art therapy exists as part of an interdisciplinary hospice team, it can enhance the holistic continuum of end of life comfort care. One case study is discussed that illustrates the art therapy journey for a hospice patient and the ensuing benefits including: using imagery and symbolism to communicate challenging emotions; gaining self-empowerment through the engagement of making art and reflecting on the resulting product; and, offering a non-threatening means to explore thoughts and feelings. Recommendations are made for further advocacy on the efficacy of art therapy as a complementary intervention that can have a positive impact on the holistic well-being of the palliative care patient.
